In her recipe, Stewart mixes the onion with vinegar, salt, and sugar. She instructs pouring this mixture over the potatoes, letting them absorb the flavors. In approximately ten minutes, all the liquid seeps back into the potatoes. At this point, she adds mayonnaise, mixing everything together.
