Sally Field Highlights Importance of Free Speech Amid Political Divisions

4 weeks ago 0

Actress Sally Field recently appeared on television to emphasize the value of the First Amendment, particularly given the current political divisions. During an interview on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” she recounted a significant moment from her school years.

“When I was in seventh grade, I was asked to memorize something that I never forgot. ‘Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press or the right of the people peacefully to assemble,'” Field shared.

Field, a two-time Academy Award winner, reflected on what the First Amendment means to her personally. She expressed a deeper understanding of its significance as the years have passed.

“It’s the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I barely knew what it meant at the time. I certainly didn’t know the importance of it. And now, almost 67 years later, I understand it like never before,” she stated.

Field’s comments come at a time when many in Hollywood often use their platforms to critique American policies. This includes reactions to the tragic shooting of Renée Nicole Good in January 2026. The incident involved a federal immigration agent and led to widespread criticism of enforcement practices.

At the Golden Globes, industry figures such as Mark Ruffalo, Wanda Sykes, Natasha Lyonne, and Jean Smart wore protest pins in Good’s memory and to challenge immigration practices.

Field expressed respect for her peers’ rights to express their views, emphasizing the protective role of the First Amendment.

“I have the right to speak out, make a sign, and peacefully join a protest without fear of punishment or retribution, or worse,” Field noted. “I have learned that this fragile thing called democracy needs to be protected, that the brilliance of our Constitution begins with the words, ‘We the People.’ I believe in the resilience of our Constitution, and I believe in the goodness and strength of the people.”

With a career spanning six decades, Field is renowned for her versatility. She achieved Academy Award recognition for Norma Rae (1979) and Places in the Heart (1984). Her filmography also includes roles in Forrest Gump, Mrs. Doubtfire, and an Oscar-nominated performance in Spielberg’s Lincoln.
