Lincoln Riley’s Challenging Tenure with USC Trojans

Lincoln Riley’s tenure as head coach of the USC Trojans has faced significant challenges. When he assumed the role before the 2022 season, there was widespread anticipation that his proven track record would restore the Trojans to their past glory. Riley’s successful stint with the Oklahoma Sooners was marked by a 55-10 overall record, a 33-7 conference record, four New Year’s Six games, and three consecutive seasons with 12 wins.

The 2022 season seemed promising, with USC close to playoff contention until Caleb Williams sustained an injury before the Pac-12 Championship Game. Since then, the Trojans have struggled to secure a place in the expanded playoff field. As the 2026 season approaches, it marks a crucial period for Riley at USC.

The Trojans’ athletic department is now under the guidance of General Manager Chad Bowden. Their NIL program has secured the nation’s top recruiting class. Despite these advantages, the upcoming schedule is formidable, and patience among stakeholders is wearing thin.

Assessing the Toughest College Football Schedules

Riley remains optimistic, expressing confidence at the Big Ten meetings, quoted by CBS Sports: “It’s May, right? But looking at it in May, there’s definitely a real difference. It’s tangible. It’s not just hope. The program has taken steps, not only in talent acquisition and building the roster, but there’s also teaching them to win and the progression that comes with that.” He continued, “I’ve seen real steps on the field and signs off the field.”

Riley acknowledges his growth as a coach, stating, “I’m a lot better coach than at any point during the years at Oklahoma.” With an average of 11 wins per year at Oklahoma, he now aims to replicate that success at USC, believing the Trojans are “close” to reaching the playoffs.

Reflecting on previous seasons, Riley noted, “We were close enough last year to taste it; I mean, literally snaps away from being right in it. I know we have absolutely taken steps. Honestly, now, it’s just time to go do it. It’s time. The program’s ready for it.”

Last season’s missed opportunities are highlighted by USC’s late lead against Illinois and the potential to narrow the score against Notre Dame. The team was significantly outplayed by Oregon in Eugene, raising critiques towards Riley’s tactics.

One example includes a high-risk trick play in South Bend that resulted in a crucial fumble by wide receiver Makai Lemon, affecting the game’s outcome.

Looking ahead to this season, USC faces challenging matchups against Indiana, Penn State, Ohio State, Oregon, Washington, and rivals UCLA. Despite Notre Dame not being on the schedule, these games demand strategic excellence. Nine wins could still denote success, but Riley must aim for ten to silence speculation about his coaching future.

If Riley has indeed grown as a head coach, achieving a double-digit win tally and playoff inclusion is crucial. Otherwise, scrutiny concerning his position will intensify.
