Clashes Erupt Outside New Jersey Detention Center

4 weeks ago 0

Anti-ICE protesters and authorities clashed on Monday outside a detention facility in New Jersey. Activists claim the site holds illegal immigrants in poor conditions. The protesters attempted to form a human chain at Delaney Hall, located in Newark.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill tried to access the facility but was denied entry. She expressed concerns over what might be concealed from the public. ‘My request for access to Delaney Hall was formally denied this morning, raising serious questions about what they are trying to hide from public view,’ Sherrill commented. She noted her opposition to private detention facilities and advocated for closing Delaney Hall.

Reports indicate some protesters engaged aggressively by throwing water and shouting at Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Law enforcement detained several individuals during the protest.

Demonstrators chanted slogans like ‘No more ICE!’ and ‘Free them all!’ ICE agents advised the crowd to move to a safer location.

Protesters blocked vehicles at Delaney Hall on June 12, following the escape of four migrants.

Detainees inside the center have reportedly initiated a hunger and labor strike. In a letter signed by nearly 300 detainees, they described living conditions as ‘inhumane,’ citing issues like poor food quality and lack of medical care. The letter acknowledged their illegal entry into the U.S., but stated they now feel ‘kidnapped.’

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson confirmed that the detainees receive basic necessities like meals, clean water, and toiletries. ‘Illegal aliens also have access to phones to communicate with their family members and lawyers,’ said the spokesperson. They claimed that ICE detention standards exceed those of most U.S. prisons.

Family members and supporters have been staging a vigil outside the facility since last Friday. Various elected officials, including U.S. Senator Andy Kim and Governor Mikie Sherrill, have called for the facility’s closure, raising concerns about the treatment of detainees.

In early 2025, a DHS official stated that Delaney Hall detained individuals involved in serious crimes, including murder and terrorism. The facility remains under scrutiny, with officials visiting and advocating for transparency and improvements in detainee conditions.
