Two individuals were injured in a shooting near the White House on Saturday evening. Law enforcement sources shared this information with CBS News. The shootout occurred near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW.
Details of the Shooting
Witnesses reported hearing approximately 15 to 30 gunshots. Multiple CBS News reporters on-site mentioned the sound of gunfire from the side of the White House complex around 6 p.m. ET. The U.S. Secret Service quickly took reporters inside for safety.
White House Lockdown
The White House was placed on lockdown following the shooting. However, the lockdown was later lifted, allowing the press to return to the White House North Lawn.
Injuries and Hospitalization
The two individuals injured included a suspect and a possible bystander. Both were transported to a local hospital. The suspect was reported to be in critical condition while the other person was in serious condition.
Secret Service Response
It was reported that Secret Service agents were targeted in the gunfire but they returned fire. Luckily, none of the officers were hospitalized, although several were evaluated at the scene.
