In a recent session at the Israeli parliament, Israel’s Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, caused controversy. He faced criticism from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and international backlash following videos he released. These videos featured taunts directed at detained flotilla activists attempting to breach Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Ben-Gvir suggested that these activists deserve lengthy imprisonment, which Netanyahu criticized as inconsistent with Israel’s values and norms. Despite Israel’s right to intercept flotillas linked to Hamas supporters, Netanyahu urged swift deportation instead.
Ben-Gvir’s videos displayed him among approximately 430 detainees. Activists, with hands tied, were kneeling on the floor inside a detention area and on the ship’s deck. Ben-Gvir, holding an Israeli flag, proclaimed, “Welcome to Israel, we are the landlords.” One activist, shouting “Free Palestine,” was pushed to the ground by security personnel. In another video, Ben-Gvir mocked the activists’ former confidence and requested Netanyahu’s approval for extended imprisonment.
Foreign Minister Gideon Saar reprimanded Ben-Gvir publicly, stating he harmed Israel with his display. Saar emphasized that Ben-Gvir did not represent Israel’s image. Ben-Gvir retorted, accusing Saar of appeasing terrorists and portraying any apology as weakness.
An Israel-based legal group, Adalah, accused authorities of abusive treatment towards activists, consistent with previous patterns. Lawyer Suhad Bishara noted two activists had been hospitalized after unnecessary rubber bullet shootings. Legal proceedings for deportation began, with activists set to appear before a judge.
Flotilla spokesperson Rania Batrice criticized Ben-Gvir’s actions, calling for stronger governmental responses. British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper condemned the videos, demanding explanations from Israel. Italy protested the activists’ treatment, summoning Israel’s ambassador. Canada, Turkey, and Greece also joined in condemnation. Hamas stated the videos highlighted Israeli moral failings.
Israel intercepted the flotilla boats, enforcing the blockade imposed since Hamas’s control of Gaza in 2007. Despite Israeli claims of non-lethal measures, flotilla organizers alleged soldiers fired on them, causing damage. Israel maintained the flotilla was a publicity attempt rather than genuine aid. A symbolic amount of aid was present on the boats. The intervention has provoked widespread international criticism.
Since the conflict’s escalation, Gaza has experienced severe impacts. Israel argues the blockade is a security measure to prevent Hamas from rearming. However, it faces accusations of collective punishment. Egypt also limits movement through its Gaza border. Recent conflicts have resulted in significant casualties, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which is part of the Hamas-run government. The ministry’s records, generally trusted by the international community, reported over 72,700 deaths due to ongoing hostilities.
