On May 19, 2026, Google announced a significant change to its search capabilities, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence. This marks the first redesign of its search bar since 2001.
For over two decades, the search box was a simple, narrow bar where users entered basic keywords like ‘World Cup.’ However, the rise of AI has enabled people to ask more detailed questions such as ‘Who are the top 24 teams in the World Cup and what chance does the United States have of advancing?’
In response, Google is making its search bar larger and more interactive. This will allow users to input longer questions and incorporate photographs and videos into their searches. Additionally, a chatbot feature on the main search page will enable follow-up questions. Google is also introducing digital assistants, or agents, to automate search tasks, such as notifying users of new apartment listings without needing to visit real estate sites like Zillow.
The enhanced search features are powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash, a new AI model by Google. This model improves software code creation, performs autonomous tasks efficiently, operates faster, and incurs lower costs than previous models.
Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, highlighted Gemini’s speed and cost-effectiveness, noting it allows for widespread availability, which in turn benefits Google.
