Cadillac Ventures into Formula One Racing with New Team and High Hopes

Cadillac has made a notable entry into the competitive landscape of Formula One racing, becoming the first major American automobile manufacturer to establish a dedicated F1 team. The renowned U.S. brand unveiled its inaugural 2026 season team livery in a strategic ad placement during the Super Bowl.

The advertisement, aired in the fourth quarter, showcased the team’s sleek black and white livery, complemented by an excerpt from President John F. Kennedy’s iconic 1962 speech, emphasizing challenges taken not because they are easy, but because they are difficult. The powerful message concluded with the phrase, “THE MISSION BEGINS.” Sharing progress under pressure, the Cadillac Formula 1® Team gave viewers a glimpse of this exciting venture.

Leading the charge for Cadillac is team principal Graeme Lowdon. A seasoned professional in the racing world, Lowdon has orchestrated the creation of the team, which includes building new facilities in Indiana, North Carolina, and Silverstone, England, pivotal locations for motorsport innovation.

The road to getting Cadillac into F1 was lengthy, with many twists and turns,” Lowdon expressed in a conversation with CBS prior to the livery’s reveal.

Cadillac’s ambitious initiative has involved the recruitment of over 500 skilled individuals from a pool of more than 143,000 applicants. “There is a lot of expectation, and quite rightly so,” Lowdon noted. General Motors’ reputation brings significant pressure, embodying the challenging spirit of Formula One.

The team’s roster includes seasoned drivers Valtteri Bottas from Finland and Mexican driver Sergio Perez, both having extensive experience and accomplishments in F1. Their combined 16 Grand Prix victories and over 500 race starts are expected to provide the new team with valuable insights and stability.

Lowdon highlighted the importance of their experience, stating, “These guys know how to win, but above all, they have the ability to unite a team. They become the focal points for engineering efforts and operational activities at the highest level.”

Experts caution that Cadillac’s debut season might not immediately result in podium finishes against established teams like Ferrari and Mercedes. Building a winning F1 team generally requires several seasons of rigorous development and sustained investments.

Ross Brawn, a major force behind the success of F1 legend Michael Schumacher, emphasized patience, saying, “It’s going to be very tough, so give them a bit of time.” Likewise, Sky Sports commentator David Croft advised fans to focus on the team’s growth rather than immediate victories.

Formula One is witnessing increasing popularity in the U.S. with ESPN reporting record viewership in 2025. Although NASCAR maintains higher viewership, the trajectory of F1’s growth, aided by the “Drive to Survive” series and additional U.S. races in Miami and Las Vegas, is encouraging.

Lowdon is optimistic that Cadillac can capitalize on this momentum, inviting fans to join the team’s journey, “Even just producing a car as complex as this is a minor victory in itself,” he explained. The pathway to success may be challenging, but with strategic planning and execution, Cadillac aims to cement its place in Formula One with determination and ambition.
