Alaska Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola faces allegations about a controversial election scheme involving individuals with the same name as her opponent, incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan. Peltola insists she had no knowledge of the alleged plan and emphasized her sole focus was on defeating Sullivan.
In a speech to supporters in Juneau, Peltola stated, “I knew nothing about any other candidates on the ballot except for me and the incumbent. That is all I have ever known about. I am not interested in tricking voters. I know I can beat Dan Sullivan.”
Sen. Dan Sullivan, a Republican, criticized Peltola’s campaign, describing the strategy as “the most corrupt action you could take.” Sullivan argued that Peltola’s campaign deliberately aimed to deceive voters and challenged Peltola’s claims of ignorance.
Most candidates, when they run for office, I’ve run for office, and this is my third election. You sit down at the beginning of your election with your advisers to think about ‘What’s my record? I’m going to run on a strong record. What’s my vision? What do I want to get done?’ Peltola sat down with her advisers, Democrats from D.C. and Alaska, and their first order of business was ‘how do we cheat? How do we make sure Alaskans throw away their votes?’ Sullivan said.
Sullivan further stated that the scheme was a secret project involving several Democratic figures, including Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer, who allegedly misled Alaskan voters directly.
The New York Times reported that Peltola’s campaign and senior aides at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee executed the scheme with hopes of confusing voters by having two Dan Sullivans on the ballot.
The Justice Department is postponing the certification of Alaska’s U.S. Senate election results due to the presence of two individuals named Dan Sullivan on the ballot. The incumbent senator appears as “Sullivan, Dan S.,” while the other candidate, a retired schoolteacher, is listed as “Sullivan, Daniel J. Jr.”
Sen. Sullivan expressed concern about the impact of the scheme on the Alaskan people. He stated that Peltola’s actions reflect a lack of respect for voters, claiming her goal was to rig the vote.
Sullivan concluded, “This is going to have a huge impact on the election. We’re going to win.”
