The fiance of Representative Haley Stevens, D-Mich., has publicly stated his refusal to support Democratic Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, citing concerns of antisemitism. In contrast, Stevens continues her endorsement of El-Sayed. Jason Turkish, a Jewish registered Democrat, expressed his decision to vote for Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers. Turkish made his stance clear during a Rogers event hosted by the Republican Jewish Coalition at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham, Michigan.
Turkish, a practicing lawyer in Michigan, shared his thoughts with reporters, highlighting his disappointment with El-Sayed’s rhetoric throughout the general election campaign. According to Turkish, rather than uniting the community, El-Sayed has contributed to division.
‘I waited, and I watched and I listened for Abdul to moderate – but he didn’t moderate, he escalated,’ Turkish shared.
Despite these concerns, Stevens maintains her position of support for El-Sayed, who won against her in a tightly contested primary election earlier in the summer. She acknowledged the differing political perspectives within her household, emphasizing her wish for El-Sayed’s victory due to the stakes involved.
A notable point of contention is Turkish’s stance on El-Sayed’s comments regarding Israel. Turkish believes such statements compromise community safety, particularly regarding the alleged ‘genocide’ in Gaza. Turkish accused El-Sayed of making Jewish communities more vulnerable through his unyielding rhetoric and failure to condemn problematic advertisements.
‘When he says genocide over and over again, when he refuses to condemn an ad that says Jews are to blame for the price of bananas, he makes my community less safe,’ Turkish stated.
El-Sayed has been critical of Israel, describing the conflict in Gaza with severe terms. While Israel asserts it is countering terrorism while minimizing civilian harm, Turkish argued that El-Sayed’s comments have exacerbated antisemitism, inciting threats against Jewish individuals.
Furthermore, Turkish criticized El-Sayed’s connections with California streamer Hasan Piker, who made contentious remarks about 9/11. Turkish noted El-Sayed’s combative reaction to media inquiries regarding Piker.
Mike Rogers, the Republican nominee, underscored his objection to El-Sayed’s candidacy, emphasizing the risks of electing someone unable to discern adversaries like Iran and condemning threats from groups like Hezbollah.
This development follows another significant departure from Stevens’ circle: her former campaign chair, attorney David Kramer, disclosed his intention to support Rogers. While Stevens endorsed El-Sayed post-primary, she has refrained from public campaign appearances alongside him since a unity event.
Eric Mack, a breaking news reporter, highlighted these unfolding dynamics, focusing on their implications for the political landscape.
