Pentagon Leadership Changes: Army Secretary Resignation and Alleged Leaks

1 hour ago 0

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has resigned amid a significant shift in Pentagon leadership. Alleged policy disagreements have been cited as a reason for his departure. President Donald Trump has appointed Adam Telle as the acting secretary.

War Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed one of the Pentagon’s senior strategic planners during an ongoing investigation. Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia is accused of leaking classified information to journalists about the Iran war, Russia’s actions in Ukraine, and other sensitive matters. Sylvia allegedly failed three polygraph tests related to these accusations. The investigation has been referred to the Department of Justice.

Sylvia is also said to have met journalists outside the Pentagon intending to leak information. This occurred after Hegseth imposed stricter media policies inside the building requiring reporters to be escorted.

Legal Action Underway

Hegseth has announced the formation of a joint task force with the DOJ to prosecute leaks “with the full force of the law.” This highlights the serious nature of the allegations against Sylvia, who served as director of the Joint Staff’s Directorate for Strategy, Plans, and Policy, known as the J5. The J5 has been sidelined from its strategic role since the spring.

Sylvia, a 1994 West Point graduate, has an extensive military career spanning over three decades, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan where he was wounded. Prior to his role at the J5, he commanded the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell. His removal is a part of a larger pattern under Hegseth, who has replaced nearly two dozen senior military leaders during his tenure.

Pentagon’s Strategic Challenges

The Pentagon is facing multiple challenges, including potential renewed military action against Iran. U.S. officials have reportedly advised Middle Eastern allies to brace for possible strikes post-midterm elections, alongside Iranian retaliation. Additional U.S. forces are being deployed to the region.

Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia’s alleged actions represent a significant concern for the Pentagon as it seeks to maintain strategic secrecy and readiness. Hegseth’s leadership changes reflect a broader attempt to secure and align military leadership with current strategic priorities.
