Sixty elite professional bass anglers are competing in Middle Tennessee for a $1.25 million prize. This tournament marks the inaugural The Champions event, showcasing a $3.25 million purse at Old Hickory Lake.
The contest, featuring top anglers from both the Bassmaster Elite Series and Major League Fishing’s Bass Pro Tour, aims to determine the best in the sport. Jacob Wheeler, an MLF star, expressed its significance, drawing parallels to major football championships.
Competition begins at 7:30 a.m. Central time, with anglers split into Team Stars (Bassmaster) and Team Stripes (MLF). After two days, the top 15 advance to the championship round. Weights reset and the winner secures a historic payout.
The presence of two amateurs, Eric Giessing and Kyle Carr, spices up the event. They earned their spots through a sweepstakes.
Experience vs. Youth
Team Stripes captain Zack Birge cites experience as an advantage over younger Bassmaster competitors. The veterans rely on traditional techniques, while many youths depend on electronics. Wheeler agrees that experience is vital.
However, young anglers like Trey McKinney, Bassmaster Angler of the Year, feel confident despite the competition.
Challenges of Old Hickory Lake
Old Hickory Lake challenges competitors with low water levels and minimal current. McKinney believes this could lead to unexpected outcomes, as conditions level the field.
Forward-facing sonar usage adds a strategic layer. Anglers must choose to use it on either Thursday or Friday, and for half the time during the championship.
MLF’s Drew Gill highlights this as an influential factor.
Emotional Control is Key
Success demands emotional control, Wheeler notes, particularly in high-stakes situations. McKinney stresses the importance of staying focused, given potential life-changing winnings.
Reflecting on a possible victory, McKinney dreams of relaxing by the beach post-win before considering investments.
