Uncertain Outcome in Israel’s 2026 Election Amid High Voter Turnout

1 day ago 0

In Tel Aviv, early exit poll celebrations took place as the results for Israel’s general election started coming in. Despite a majority of the votes being tallied by Wednesday morning, the election results remain too close to call. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu leads against Gadi Eisenkot, his main rival, according to the official tally.

However, opposition groups collectively received more votes than Netanyahu’s right-wing alliance. This suggests a significant voter turnout signaling dissatisfaction with Netanyahu’s administration. Both Netanyahu and Eisenkot addressed supporters late Tuesday, hailing early results as victories. Eisenkot, former military chief of the center-right, emphasized change, diplomacy, and less extremism. Netanyahu declared a strong majority for his right-wing bloc among the Zionist public.

The tight results suggest potential political deadlock. Forming a government requires a coalition of 61 out of 120 Knesset seats. Final outcomes will rely on alliances and negotiations.

“The public has voted for change,” Eisenkot stated.

Eisenkot’s Yashar party, involving figures from the center and moderate right, aims to form a coalition with a range from the liberal left to the right. These efforts strive to exclude Netanyahu from leadership.

The role of Arab-led parties could be pivotal, yet both Netanyahu and Eisenkot resist partnering with them. Arab voters represent around 20% of the population. Parties like the United Arab List and Joint List could influence coalition-building.

Tuesday’s voter turnout exceeded 77%, highlighting significant engagement, with expatriates participating vigorously. This election follows the 2023 Hamas-led attack, which escalated regional tensions.

Netanyahu’s long tenure faces scrutiny. Post-Hamas attacks, questions arise about his ability to maintain security. The attack resulted in 1,200 Israeli deaths and multiple hostages. Government foresight had reportedly received warnings, but responses resulted in a devastating military counteraction in Gaza.

Gaza’s Health Ministry reports over 74,000 Palestinian deaths and severe destruction. Israel rebuffs accusations of genocide, while Netanyahu confronts an international arrest warrant over alleged war crimes.

Israel’s strained global relationships extend to the United States, where public support has declined. Still, many Israelis remain unfazed by criticism regarding the Gaza conflict, according to a July 2025 poll.

During Netanyahu’s election night event, illustrative videos of military operations and endorsements from former President Trump played. Discussions between Trump and Netanyahu suggest potential operations against Iran, demanding Netanyahu’s reelection to follow through.

Likud supporters maintain a steadfast perspective towards ongoing conflicts. “We will keep fighting,” asserts Ori Hazan, reflecting the sentiment among Netanyahu’s adherents.

As the vote counting continues, the results could extend to Thursday, influencing the progression of coalition negotiations. The narrow voting outcome will determine if either bloc can establish governance or if Netanyahu remains as a caretaker prime minister leading to another election.

Yair Golan from Eisenkot’s bloc advocates partnering with Arab parties to bridge societal divides. Skepticism persists post-2023’s attacks, yet such alliances remain essential for forming a viable government.

Amid this uncertainty, another election next year remains a possible recourse if governmental formation proves unsuccessful.
