During a campaign rally in Michigan, Donald Trump expressed strong dissatisfaction with Norway. He criticized the Norwegian Nobel Committee for not awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize. At the rally, Trump articulated his belief that his diplomatic efforts deserved recognition. He highlighted his track record in resolving conflicts, mentioning that he had settled eight wars and was dealing with issues involving Iran and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Trump shared his expectations before the Nobel announcement, noting comments he made to the First Lady about his belief in winning the prize. However, when South African jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, Trump expressed his discontent. He remarked negatively about Norway, labeling it a ‘s***house country’ and declaring disinterest in any association with it.
Trump has long discussed his quest for the Nobel Peace Prize, comparing his achievements to those of former President Barack Obama, who received the prize in 2009. During a United Nations General Assembly meeting in 2025, Trump claimed he ended several prolonged conflicts and deserved recognition.
The Nobel Peace Prize is selected by a five-member independent Norwegian Nobel Committee. Publicly announced nominations for Trump have been made by Israel and Pakistan. However, the committee does not reveal nominee identities for 50 years.
Earlier this year, Trump’s lack of recognition by the Nobel Committee seemingly influenced his foreign policy stance. He conveyed to Norway’s Prime Minister that he did not feel an obligation to pursue peace, referencing his bid to acquire Greenland and possible tariffs on allies, including Norway.
Navanethem “Navi” Pillay’s selection stirred critique from Trump, who questioned her recognition during a rally in New York. He reiterated his foreign policy accomplishments on Truth Social, emphasizing what he believed to be an oversight by the Nobel Committee.
Despite receiving other awards, such as FIFA’s Peace Prize and a ‘Man of the Century’ award, Trump continues to criticize the Nobel Committee’s decisions. His campaign for the Nobel has included significant public nominations, such as those from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump has accepted various recognitions, including a Nobel Peace Prize medal from Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, though officials clarified that the status of Nobel laureate remains with the original awardee.
