The Auburn Tigers celebrated a significant victory over the Georgia Bulldogs in Week 7. Days after this triumph, head coach Alex Golesh revealed a difficult decision involving one of Auburn’s top defensive players. Star linebacker Xavier Atkins, who emerged prominently in his sophomore season, is no longer with the team.
Atkins excelled last season, achieving nine sacks and leading the SEC with 17 tackles for loss. These achievements earned him First Team All-SEC recognition. In the current season, Atkins continued demonstrating his skills, tying for the lead in sacks and ranking as Auburn’s second top tackler through five games.

Before facing Georgia, Golesh stated that Atkins would miss the game but did not explain why. This absence has now escalated, resulting in Atkins’ departure from Auburn’s program. ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel confirmed Auburn’s decision to dismiss Atkins, though reasons remain unclear. Golesh addressed Atkins’ Week 7 absence by stating that the team was “continuing to work through” the situation.

The loss of Atkins stands as a notable setback for Auburn, especially as they aim to sustain the momentum from their win over Georgia. Without Atkins, Auburn prepares for their next challenge in Week 8 when they host the No. 18 ranked LSU Tigers on Saturday, October 24.
