Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appealed to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to restore Ukraine’s full access to the Starlink and Starshield satellite networks. This appeal comes after reports from Ukrainian troops about speed restrictions on drones targeting Russian assets.
Zelensky described his conversation with Rubio as focused on various critical issues. These include shortages of interceptor missiles, reduced satellite speeds, and intelligence regarding Russian missile launches.
Recently, Ukrainian drone operators found that their unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were flying slower than usual. This slowdown affected their mission to target Russian logistics, munitions depots, and command centers, especially those up to 125 miles from the front line.
Ukrainian officials attributed the problem to a restricted connection with Elon Musk’s Starshield network, which is a military-grade version of Starlink. Kyiv also reported a lack of intelligence data on Russian ballistic missile attacks directed at its major cities.
While intelligence flows have reportedly resumed, these incidents highlight Ukraine’s dependency on U.S. support in its conflict with Russia, even when relations are strained. Rubio stated that the U.S. did not halt intelligence-sharing, and claimed the nation was not responsible for the satellite restrictions.
However, Musk indicated that the Starshield systems are controlled by the U.S. government, implying that any limitations are governed by the U.S. military, and ultimately, the U.S. president. Anonymous sources from the Pentagon conveyed a message that the White House requested reduced Starshield speeds for Ukraine.
Ukraine relies on American systems to receive advanced alerts about Russian missile threats. While Kyiv did not directly accuse Washington over missed early warnings, there has been a historical precedent of restricted intelligence flow.
Zelensky mentioned that the throttling of connections sends a ‘message,’ while former President Donald Trump has linked Ukraine’s actions against Russian oil infrastructure to global fuel price hikes.
Currently, Ukraine lacks viable alternatives to the Starshield and Starlink networks, primarily using them for communication and data transfer. Zelensky has emphasized the need to restore previous settings, stating he will continue discussions at various levels with allies.
