Indiana University Honors Military Connections with Traditions and Memorials

51 minutes ago 0

The Indiana University campus in Bloomington showcases significant tributes to the armed forces, including anti-aircraft guns and a part of the USS Indiana outside Memorial Stadium. These displays honor the men and women from Indiana who have served in the United States military.

On campus, the connection between sporting events and the military presence is strong. As No. 5 Indiana, the defending national champion, hosts No. 4 Ohio State in a major Big Ten college football matchup, this link is particularly evident.

“IU definitely has an upper echelon of military history, and they do really treat their military personnel with a lot of respect,” said Vasiliios Koultourides, a senior at Indiana and a member of the Indiana National Guard.

Indiana University deeply respects its military history, as shown by more than the relics outside the stadium. The campus Memorial Student Union houses a treasured historical document, the Golden Book. Dating back to 1898, this 152-page registry details the military service of those tied to the university.

Initiated by the Indiana Daily Student, the Golden Book began with a list of IU individuals who served in the Spanish-American War, then expanded to include veterans of other conflicts. The pages list names of alumni who served in wars from the War of 1812 to World War II.

In 2016, Indiana University created a digital version of the Golden Book, now containing over 25,000 names. This effort allows easier access for those wishing to explore this legacy.

Zainab Diouf, another Indiana student and National Guard member, expressed her appreciation: “I just think it’s the coolest thing ever. No other school has that. I really encourage if you’re here at IU to go see it.”

The Center for Veterans and Military Students at Indiana University supports militarily-connected students with benefits, funding, scholarships, and career guidance. It’s an important resource for veterans returning to school, providing a community space with shared experiences.

Indiana University integrates a military-friendly culture into various campus activities. Athletic events feature military students participating in roles such as the color guard or engaging in traditions like firing the cannon during football games.

“We have such a big military-oriented culture here. IU loves its veterans and veteran students,” Koultourides observed. “It’s a really nice experience for all of us to have the opportunity to be a part of IU’s athletic culture.”
