Efforts to control packaging waste in the European Union have led to difficulties for small businesses across the region. The new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which became effective in August, has caused widespread disruption.
The regulation introduces various restrictions that will gradually take effect over the next few years. Among these is a prohibition on single-use hotel shampoos and individual ketchup packets, which will begin in 2030. These measures aim to reduce waste by 5 percent by the decade’s end.
This situation highlights the challenges faced by businesses as the EU seeks to address packaging waste, prompting some companies to reevaluate their recycling and packaging practices.
