Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey Discusses Federal Immigration Measures

2 months ago 0

In a recent interview on CNN’s “The Arena with Kasie Hunt,” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey addressed concerns regarding federal immigration policies. The discussion arose following the withdrawal of 700 federal agents from Minneapolis, as part of an initiative led by the Trump administration after two incidents involving federal officers.

The mayor expressed his opposition to what he describes as the “coercion” used by the Trump administration in enforcing immigration policies. However, Kasie Hunt highlighted that some policies currently favored by conservatives were once implemented during President Barack Obama’s administration.

“I take your point about the voting rolls for sure, but it is worth noting that during the Obama years, the Hennepin County Jail actually had a policy where they let an [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] ICE agent keep an office there and allowed them to talk to immigrants,” Hunt remarked.

Hunt questioned whether it’s appropriate for jails to hand over individuals with an ICE detainer if they have committed a crime, emphasizing that such actions occur only after individuals have served their sentence for any crimes committed locally.

Mayor Frey acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting that he does not have full expertise in jail operations as they are outside his jurisdiction. He suggested that there are lawful mechanisms available, such as acquiring a federal warrant that works alongside a state warrant to ensure legal detention following bail.

Despite requests for further comment, Frey’s office did not immediately respond to inquiries from Fox News Digital.

In parallel, during a conversation with NBC News, President Donald Trump expressed a preference for a gentler approach towards immigration enforcement but underscored the necessity of maintaining a toughness when dealing with severe criminals.

“I learned that maybe we can use a little bit of a softer touch, but you still have to be tough,” President Trump stated. “We’re dealing with really hard criminals. I’ve called the governor [Tim Walz], I called the mayor [Jacob Frey]… had great conversations with them.”

Frey’s dialogue with Kasie Hunt sheds light on the ongoing debates and challenges involved in balancing federal directives with local jurisdictional autonomy in immigration control.
