Dan Levy Criticizes Shane Gillis
“Schitt’s Creek” star Dan Levy has publicly criticized comedian Shane Gillis for remarks made during a “Saturday Night Live” monologue. Levy accused Gillis of misogyny and linked such objectification of women to the broader issue of sexual assault.
Levy hosted NBC’s sketch comedy show in 2021 and expressed his condemnation through an Instagram video. He urged men to oppose comments like Gillis’, stating that their complacency helps create an environment where women face assault.
Gillis’ Controversial Opening Monologue
Shane Gillis caused a stir while hosting “SNL” for the third time, making jokes about women’s revealing workout attire in public gyms. Gillis remarked, “I haven’t been to the gym in so long. I didn’t know women just dress like whores now?” His comments drew backlash, with Levy standing firm against such characterizations.
Levy rejected the idea that workout clothing justified Gillis’ comments, stating, “Women wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them whores. It makes the men calling them whores misogynists.”
Response from Others
Lisa Cusack, president of the Don’t L.A. My Burbank PAC, responded to Levy’s criticism. She argued that noticing revealing clothing does not automatically equate to misogyny. Cusack commented, “A woman wearing a skimpy outfit isn’t necessarily a whore, and a man noticing she’s using sex to get attention isn’t automatically a misogynist.”
Cusack further remarked on the modern culture of glamor and social expectations. “Glamour is controlling perception with a little bit of mystery. In losing this, we lose a lot of romance,” she added.
Levy’s Call for Action
Levy emphasized the importance of addressing the objectification of women both in media and society. He argued, “This is an everybody issue. The more men objectify women in media, the more other men see and treat them as objects.”
Fox News Digital reached out to NBC and Gillis’ team for comments, but Gillis’ team declined to respond.
