Indiana State Senate 6th District Faces Leadership Change

58 minutes ago 0

The Indiana State Senate 6th District will see new leadership for the first time since 2014. Democratic candidate Kate-Lynn Holley and Republican candidate James “Jay” Starkey are competing for the seat. Rick Niemeyer, the previous office holder, was defeated in the May primary.

Kate-Lynn Holley, a real estate agent from DeMotte, has entered the political arena driven by concerns over economic challenges faced by Hoosiers. Holley emphasizes affordability as her primary campaign focus. She seeks to improve housing accessibility, having witnessed clients struggle through the home buying process only to be priced out. Her goal includes lowering utility, groceries, and gas prices, ensuring families can afford necessities without financial strain.

Holley prioritizes public school support, aiming to reassess Indiana’s voucher program. She argues that most beneficiaries of the program earn between $250,000 and $300,000 annually, questioning the distribution of state funds for private education.

Despite Starkey’s endorsements from several state officials, Holley remains focused on engaging voters across the political spectrum. She urges constituents to consider candidates who prioritize their best interests over party lines.

James “Jay” Starkey, a construction project manager, identifies as a Christian conservative aligned with Donald Trump’s agenda. Starkey promises accountable leadership focused on life protection, traditional family values, tax reform, and strengthened immigration enforcement. He also advocates for increased school choice and local law enforcement backing.

Starkey has received endorsements from notable figures such as Gov. Mike Braun and Attorney General Todd Rokita. He plans to address property tax reform, given anticipated taxation increases in the sixth district, and ensure fair utility pricing amid local development.

Starkey criticizes the current state leadership as disconnected from the constituency’s needs, emphasizing the importance of representative voice in decision-making.
