Republican nominee for governor of California, Steve Hilton, voiced his disdain for Xavier Becerra in a recent interview with Carlo Versano on Newsweek’s The 1600 podcast. Hilton criticized Becerra’s performance, labeling him as lacking substance and focused on insults rather than meaningful discussion.
He watched a clip from their CNN debate on September 30, where Becerra made comments about immigration that Hilton found baseless. Hilton emphasized his own immigrant background from Hungary, contrasting his experiences with Becerra’s criticisms.
Hilton’s critique extended beyond the debate, noting Becerra’s absence from a Los Angeles Times forum due to alleged scheduling conflicts. Hilton questioned what Becerra might be prioritizing, given his apparent lack of public engagement.
Now a U.S. citizen, Hilton aims to break the Democratic hold on California, a feat last achieved by a Republican in 2006 with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Despite facing voter registration challenges, Hilton remains optimistic, campaigning actively across all Californian counties.
In terms of political endorsements, Hilton clarified his independent stance, despite former President Donald Trump’s support. He urged California voters to consider a change after years of single-party governance, advocating for political balance and improvement.
Addressing state issues, Hilton pointed out the disparity in gas prices compared to national averages and praised federal border efforts under Trump. He opposed certain federal actions impacting California, such as funding cuts to the University of California and criticized unnecessary federal interference.
Hilton refuted claims from Becerra about mass deportations, highlighting the governor’s lack of authority over federal immigration policy. He proposed adjusting state taxes with a new tax structure to ease burdens on low-income earners and suggested funding changes for various initiatives.
Hilton’s campaign promises include a substantial decrease in state taxes, promising relief through a flat tax structure. He aims to pay for this by curtailing funding for high-speed rail, tackling fraud, and applying budget cuts across government departments.
Hilton’s platform also involves reducing fees imposed on small businesses and tackling what he describes as predatory legal practices. His campaign ad strategy, titled ‘Just Try It’, encourages voters to explore new political options, despite mixed reactions.
On technology and AI, Hilton supports a cautious approach, advocating for temporary pauses in AI applications within classrooms until appropriate guidelines are established. He criticized uninformed political views on AI and promoted understanding and informed decision-making.
Hilton remains committed to manageable tech usage, notably using a basic flip phone. He discussed his involvement in the Brexit campaign, defending the choice despite acknowledging governance failures in Britain post-referendum.
Finally, Hilton reminisced on California’s historical openness and innovative spirit, claiming it has been stifled by current governance. His ambition is to restore this dynamic, pioneering environment while confronting existing bureaucratic hurdles.
