Dre Greenlaw, linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers, has been suspended for one game by the NFL. This decision follows a series of aggressive actions during a recent game against the Seattle Seahawks. Greenlaw’s confrontations, including a headbutt to Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones, spurred disciplinary measures.
During the game, Greenlaw committed unsportsmanlike conduct offenses. He hit Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold as Darnold was heading out of bounds. Tensions escalated when Greenlaw, surrounded by opposing players, headbutted Jones, who was without his helmet at the time.
The suspension is without pay, and Greenlaw can return to the 49ers’ active roster after the Oct. 19 game against the Washington Commanders. While Greenlaw has the option to appeal the suspension, it’s unclear if he will do so. If he chooses to appeal, the case will be reviewed by a hearing officer, likely one of Derrick Brooks, Jordy Nelson, Ron Rivera, or James Thrash, all former NFL players.
Greenlaw has a history of emotional outbursts and has previously faced fines and suspensions. In a past incident, he was disqualified following a sideline confrontation with Philadelphia Eagles personnel. The NFL suspended him for chasing and threatening referee Brad Allen after a Denver Broncos game. Last week, Greenlaw received an $11,941 fine for taunting Broncos coach Sean Payton.
Greenlaw’s aggressive demeanor is a recurring theme, marked by various penalties and suspensions throughout his career. The 49ers have also dealt with suspensions this season, with owner Jed York serving a penalty due to conduct violations.
