Disney and ABC Challenge FCC’s License Renewal Actions

1 hour ago 0

Disney and ABC have criticized the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for allegedly using the license renewal process to bypass judicial review and apply pressure on the network. Disney initially filed a lawsuit against the FCC in August, claiming retaliation concerning the early broadcast license renewal of eight ABC-owned stations. These stations are under scrutiny by the FCC to determine if they serve the public interest, especially regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices.

In a recent filing, Disney argued that the FCC had several other options to investigate its DEI practices without necessitating early license renewals. These actions, according to Disney, seem intended to evade legal scrutiny. The company points to the FCC’s decision to renew all eight stations simultaneously as an unprecedented move designed to pressure the media company.

The FCC was instructed by the court to provide details on alternative methods it could have considered. During a court session, the agency mentioned that other procedures might require federal court enforcement. Disney interprets this as evidence that the FCC aimed to shield its actions from judicial review.

Adam Jackman, an FCC spokesperson, labeled the filing as an attempt to hinder the FCC in court.

Disney and ABC have accused the FCC of acting on behalf of the Trump administration in retaliation for shows and hosts critical of President Donald Trump, such as Jimmy Kimmel.

The FCC has also launched an investigation into ABC’s daytime show “The View,” based on compliance with equal opportunity requirements. Disney asserts that “The View” qualifies as a news program, which exempts it from equal airtime rules.

Fox News Digital sought comments from ABC and Disney about the latest development but did not receive an immediate response.
