UCLA’s Nico Iamaleava Out for Season Due to Knee Injury

1 hour ago 0

UCLA’s senior starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava will not return for the remainder of the season after suffering a knee injury. This information comes from a person familiar with the situation who is not permitted to speak publicly on the matter.

This development is particularly challenging for the UCLA Bruins. They are ranked No. 12 and have an undefeated record of 5-0 this season under coach Bob Chesney. The team was on a promising path toward a College Football Playoff spot.

Injury Details

The incident occurred during the first half of UCLA’s game against Oregon. Iamaleava was running when tackled and spun, which led him to grab his leg. During this tackle, he also sustained a head hit from Oregon’s Bear Alexander. Although Iamaleava briefly returned for one play, Coach Chesney mentioned in a halftime interview that Iamaleava appeared fine after taking a hit in the quad. However, he did not come back after halftime and was later seen in street clothes.

Before his injury exit, Iamaleava completed 10 out of 17 passes, accumulating 162 yards and two interceptions. Over five games, his totals included 982 passing yards, 144 rushing yards, five touchdowns, and four interceptions.

Backup Quarterback Steps In

Following Iamaleava’s injury, senior Ty Dieffenbach, previously third on the team’s depth chart, took charge of the UCLA offense. Dieffenbach completed three passes, totaling 43 yards and one touchdown. This helped secure a 17-15 victory for the Bruins.

Coach Chesney stated, When someone goes down, and someone’s got to step up, you’re either exposed or you’re revealed. He praised Dieffenbach for performing well under pressure, knowing the run game, and delivering a vital touchdown pass.

Quarterback Competition

Madden Iamaleava, Nico’s younger brother, has appeared in two games this season, taking over when Nico was injured against Purdue and against Maryland when UCLA led comfortably. Despite this, Chesney chose Dieffenbach because of the advantage he posed on the ground.

Chesney explained, We are really on a week-to-week basis here… we felt like we had to run more with the quarterback possibly, and Ty had a really nice week; that put us in that spot. Chesney emphasized that both quarterbacks are consistently competing for the backup position.

Dieffenbach remarked on the competition, Every week is a battle between me and Madden for the two-spot… we both were executing in practice. He described his focus and readiness to execute once he was called to play.

Before transferring to UCLA, Dieffenbach contributed significantly at Cal Poly in 2025. He started 11 games, amassing 1,305 yards, nine touchdowns, nine interceptions, and 321 rushing yards with four touchdowns. His transfer from Pittsburgh to UCLA marked a return to Southern California.

Dieffenbach’s high school career at Agoura included a start as a wide receiver before finishing with 4,153 passing yards and 48 touchdowns over three varsity seasons.
