South Yorkshire Police reported that officers were alerted to the emergency at approximately 1:35 p.m. local time. The man had entered the tiger enclosure, and despite the efforts of emergency responders, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The man’s family has been informed and is receiving support from specialist officers. Authorities clarified details regarding the tiger involved, confirming that the animal was unharmed and remained within its enclosure.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park’s Features
The wildlife park’s “Land of the Tigers” exhibit, which opened in 2011, offers visitors a unique experience. Guests can walk along a 300-meter-long raised walkway above the habitat for optimal views of the Amur tigers.
Park Response and Investigation
Following this tragic event, the park evacuated visitors and announced it would stay closed on Sunday for further investigation. Police urged the public not to share videos of the attack circulating online.
Footage on social media revealed a man inside the enclosure before the attack. Witnesses reported the man seemed agitated, though authorities have yet to provide details surrounding the incident.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park labeled the attack as a “serious incident” and activated emergency procedures swiftly.
“Our emergency response procedures were immediately activated, and emergency services are currently attending the scene,” a park statement said. The park pledged its cooperation with authorities to uncover the facts. “The safety and wellbeing of visitors, staff, and animals remain our highest priority.”
Yorkshire Ambulance Service dispatched multiple resources, including two ambulances, a doctor, and Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
The investigation into the man’s death is ongoing.
Comparisons to Past U.S. Zoo Incidents
While rare, similar incidents at U.S. zoos involving big cats have captured national attention.
A notable example occurred at New York City’s Bronx Zoo in 2012, when David Villalobos jumped into a tiger enclosure, sustaining severe injuries. He survived following intervention by zoo workers.
Another incident took place at Naples Zoo in Florida in December 2021. River Rosenquist, employed by an outside cleaning contractor, entered an unauthorized area and was attacked. A sheriff’s deputy shot the tiger to rescue him, resulting in Rosenquist’s survival despite serious injuries. He faced no criminal charges due to legal limitations.
Recent events include a man climbing visitor fencing at Saint Louis Zoo’s tiger exhibit in August. He returned unharmed, prompting zoo officials to consider safety improvements.
In 2024, a New Jersey woman faced charges after approaching a tiger enclosure at Cohanzick Zoo. Her encounter led to aggressive reactions from the tiger, resulting in her Citation for trespassing and local ordinance violations.
