Yankees’ Season Ends as Fan Interference Alters Key Play

The New York Yankees concluded their season under disappointing circumstances after being swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Division Series. On Wednesday night, a controversial call during Game 3 led to significant debate.

The Yankees lost 4-3 to the Rays at Yankee Stadium. During the sixth inning, Anthony Volpe’s fly ball sparked controversy when it was initially ruled a home run. With George Lombard on first base and two outs, Volpe hit a fly ball to left field. It carried into the stands, and umpires initially called it a game-tying home run. However, a replay review showed a fan interfering by reaching over the wall, leading umpires to change the call to an RBI double. The fan in question was removed from the stadium.

Spencer Jones subsequently struck out, ending the Yankees’ scoring opportunities for the game. The MLB’s Replay Center supported the decision by stating, “After viewing all relevant angles, the Replay Official definitively determined the spectator interfered with the ball over the field of play. The ball would not have left the playing field nor would it have been caught.” This contradicted initial Statcast data, which suggested the ball might have been a home run in several ballparks.

Statcast had initially estimated that the ball, hit at 357 feet with a velocity of 97.9 mph and a 42-degree launch angle, could have cleared the fences in 13 ballparks, including Yankee Stadium. However, this assessment was revised the following morning, excluding Yankee Stadium from that list.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone stated, “The umpires did a good job on their call. When he hit it, I was concerned right away because it felt like something off. Seeing the replay, I thought they got it right.” Anthony Volpe, reflecting on the incident, commented, “Just seeing it through the replay and hoping for the best. But, crazy.”

The occurrence raises questions about whether the interference truly affected a potential postseason comeback for the Yankees. However, the conclusion remains speculative without a definitive answer on Volpe’s fly ball trajectory.
