East Dundee Village President Censured for Political Actions During Oktoberfest

2 hours ago 0

The East Dundee Village Board unanimously censured Village President Dan Pearson for inviting Republican political figures, including gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey, to speak at the village’s Oktoberfest event. The censure also addressed various controversial actions and remarks by Pearson.

“Whether or not you agree with this motion, I would just encourage you to read the entirety of the resolution,” Trustee Scott Kunze noted. “It’s not simply about inviting political candidates on stage. There is a list of things that have been done that have cost this village a lot of money in legal fees.”

Pearson’s endorsements on social media and inappropriate remarks at the event were cited. His actions led to legal complaints, with accusations of violating state election laws prohibiting the use of public funds to endorse political figures.

Bailey and Jennifer Davis, a Congressional candidate for District 8, were invited to the stage during the event, generating accusations of preferential treatment. Pearson’s actions created a negative impact on the community, according to Trustee Matt Oclon.

Though Pearson apologized, the censure resolution stated he didn’t adequately acknowledge his actions. The resolution specified that Pearson should not use village events or resources to promote political activities and must maintain professionalism.

Residents supported the board’s stance, urging Pearson to resign over ethical concerns. Allison Moe, an eight-year resident, expressed her discontent regarding Pearson’s promotion of English as America’s language, questioning his representation of the entire community.

Trustee Andy Sauder noted the divisive nature of the issue, emphasizing the need for local governance free from partisan politics. The village has initiated staff training to prevent similar incidents in the future. Trustee Kathleen Mahony highlighted how Pearson’s actions detracted from the community event’s success, overshadowing the effort of organizers.
