The Chicago International Film Festival is gearing up for an exciting 2026 edition, scheduled from October 14-25. This year’s event introduces the Physical Media Fair, inspired by last year’s successful mobile Criterion Closet. Artistic Director Mimi Plauché explained the idea behind this addition, noting the overlap in the experience of watching films in theaters and owning physical media. As streaming becomes ubiquitous, the festival seeks to celebrate the tangible aspects of movie culture.
Attendees can look forward to roundtable discussions, a media swap for DVDs, Blu-rays, and even VHS tapes. Plauché emphasizes the festival’s excitement about this new venture and its potential to become a staple in future festivals. The inclusion of older films is another key feature, with this year’s Black Perspectives program spotlighting foundational classics like Cheryl Dunye’s ‘The Watermelon Woman’ and Stephen Winter’s ‘Chocolate Babies.’
Notable guest appearances include Cheryl Dunye and Stephen Winter, who will engage audiences with in-person conversations. Comedian Marlon Wayans will receive the career achievement award, and actress Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor will be honored with the tour de force award during the world premiere of ‘Liz Here Now.’ Director Ava DuVernay will present her forthcoming documentary, ’14th,’ which examines the 14th Amendment and its impact on citizenship and equal protection rights.
Plauché urges attendees to embrace the element of surprise, encouraging them to explore new films with an open mind. This year’s lineup promises a mix of fresh narratives and beloved classics. Below are some notable films featured in the festival:
