On Sunday, authorities arrested a realtor from Irvine, California, Wanying “Heather” Zhang, aged 34, at Los Angeles International Airport. FBI agents took her into custody as she attempted to board a flight to China, according to First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli.
Zhang faces accusations of acting as an unregistered agent for the Chinese government. In 2025, Zhang allegedly traveled to Seattle to monitor a close relative of a Taiwanese government official. She reportedly sent photos, videos, and license plate information to officials in China.
“She coordinated the trip with an associate and used tradecraft to avoid detection,” Essayli stated. Not notifying the Attorney General of her activities constitutes a federal offense.
This situation is ongoing, and updates are anticipated.
