Recently, Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger formally concluded the collaboration between several state agencies and federal immigration authorities. This decision was articulated through an executive directive that put an end to 287(g) agreements involving the Virginia State Police, the state Department of Corrections, the Department of Wildlife, and the Virginia Marine Resources Commission alongside U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
These Agreements improperly ceded discretion and authority over Virginia law enforcement to federal authorities, the directive stated.I have full confidence that Virginia law enforcement agents are keeping Virginia safer when exercising their authority under Virginia law. Virginia always remains ready to enforce the law, and Virginia law enforcement will continue to exercise available authority under a valid judicial warrant.
The 287(g) program is a federal initiative that grants local law enforcement officers the power to perform certain roles typically assigned to immigration officers, under ICE’s guidance. This includes identifying undocumented immigrants within local jails to prevent their release back into communities.
Governor Spanberger, who has positioned herself as a moderate, repealed a former executive order upon taking office in January. This order had previously obligated state law enforcement and encouraged local police and sheriff’s departments to deputize their officers to act as ICE agents.
A statement from the governor’s office emphasized that Governor Spanberger removed the directive that required Virginia law enforcement agencies to divert their focus away from their primary tasks such as investigating crimes, enforcing state and local laws, and maintaining safety across Virginia.
This decision has sparked criticism from Republicans who argue that reducing cooperation between local and federal immigration authorities may pose challenges. The change comes at a time of escalated national debates about immigration policies, notably highlighted by actions in Minnesota related to former President Trump’s stringent immigration directives.
As a part of ongoing political discourse, Virginia Democrats have expressed their support for new tax proposals, raising discussions about the state’s commitment to making life more affordable for its residents.
Efforts to obtain further comments from Governor Spanberger’s office have been made, as the implications of this policy change continue to unfold.
