Padres Face Tough Challenge After Game 2 Loss Against Brewers

2 hours ago 0

The San Diego Padres’ manager, Craig Stammen, provided insights into why closer Mason Miller remained in the game on Sunday despite encountering difficulties during the ninth inning.

Mason Miller, usually heralded as one of MLB’s top pitchers, entered for the Padres in the eighth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 2 of the NLDS. He initially performed with efficiency, swiftly handling his opponents. However, the ninth inning presented challenges as Miller walked the bases loaded with two outs.

Even amid the trouble, Stammen decided to keep Miller in play to face Jackson Chourio, who subsequently hit a single to center field. This move resulted in two runs for the Brewers, securing a 2-0 series lead heading into San Diego.

Going into the game, we were thinking of Mason for six outs anyway, Stammen remarked post-game. Especially with how quick the eighth inning went for him, he was just battling the strike zone at the end.

Over the season, Miller maintained impressive performance metrics, achieving a 1.67 ERA across 70 innings and striking out 129 batters. He led the NL with 38 saves in 41 opportunities. However, he hadn’t achieved a six-out save since 2024 with the Athletics.

Implications of the Loss for the Padres

The Padres face a significant hurdle following Sunday’s defeat as they must secure three consecutive wins to progress to the NLCS.

Additionally, there’s uncertainty regarding the availability of their premier starter, Michael King, for the upcoming two games, as he recuperates from his Game 2 performance.

Despite the challenges, the Padres have a solid home record against the Brewers this season, having swept them in a three-game series during the latter half. This history suggests they might sustain the series to five games if they perform optimally.

Before contemplating Game 5, the Padres must concentrate on Game 3. They are set to initiate their potential comeback in Game 3 with Nick Pivetta leading the effort on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. PT.
