All U.S. Air Force bombers stationed in the U.K. have been sent back to their home bases in the United States after suspicions of a terror plot emerged. This action is believed to be in response to a threat potentially linked to Iran targeting a U.S. military site last week, officials reported.
About a dozen B-1 bombers were withdrawn from the Royal Air Force (RAF) Station Fairford in Gloucestershire, England. The base serves as the sole European operational site for American heavy bombers.
“We can acknowledge now that all U.S. bombers that were deployed to RAF Fairford have re-deployed to their home stations in the United States,” a department official stated.
The Pentagon clarified that despite the relocation, the fleet remains ready for long-range operations from the continental United States at any time.
RAF Fairford plays a crucial role as a base for U.S. heavy strategic bombers that have supported operations, including missions aimed at Iranian locations.
Last Sunday, three suspicious vehicles with fuel accelerants were discovered near RAF Fairford. Authorities confirmed that while no explosive devices were found, a significant amount of petrol was recovered.
“We can confirm that no improvised explosive devices were found. However, a quantity of petrol was recovered,” officials noted.
The investigation considered links to Iranian state proxies, leading to the arrest of a British-Iranian dual national suspected of preparation for terrorist acts.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio remarked that the plot “clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor.” President Donald Trump also suggested that the incident might have connections to Iran.
A total of six individuals were apprehended regarding the event, including five British nationals in their twenties. Police have subsequently released all suspects on bail as investigations continue.
“I understand why this development will have come as a surprise to many, but I’d like to reiterate that it was an investigative decision, and one which is grounded in experience and careful consideration of policing powers,” officials commented on the release of the suspects.
