Southern California is bracing for a significant heat wave with temperatures forecast to soar 15 to 20 degrees above normal levels. This prolonged period of high temperatures is slated to last through next week, impacting various regions, according to the National Weather Service.
Extreme Heat Advisory in Effect
The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat advisory starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, which will remain in place until 8 p.m. on Thursday, possibly extending further. Residents are urged to take precautions such as staying hydrated, avoiding sun exposure, utilizing air-conditioned spaces, and checking in on family members.
A high-pressure system will establish itself over the eastern Pacific and West Coast, intensifying through Sunday and driving temperatures to reach as high as 95 degrees during the Dodgers’ National League Division Series game against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday.
Record-Breaking Temperatures Predicted
In downtown Los Angeles, temperatures are anticipated to range from 99 to 103 degrees. Valleys could experience warmer conditions, with temperatures between 102 and 107 degrees. Coastal regions stretching from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles might see highs of 90 to 98 degrees over the weekend. By midweek, temperatures may rise even further, potentially setting new daily records.
However, by next weekend, the influx of tropical moisture may bring some relief as it enters the region, leading to cooler temperatures.
Hurricane Rachel’s Impact on Surf Levels
In addition to the extreme heat, a swell generated by Hurricane Rachel is expected to result in increased surf levels. Beaches in the area may experience elevated waves of 5 to 6 feet from Tuesday through Thursday.
The California coast has already seen high surf throughout the summer, causing severe erosion in several popular beach areas.
