Investigation Launched into FlyDubai Hijacking Incident
Investigators are examining a potential terrorism link in the case of an alleged hijacking on a FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Israel. The situation involved an Omani co-pilot stabbing the captain mid-flight, prompting an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. Former Israeli National Security Council Chief, Eyal Hulata, explained how the cockpit door was unlocked, allowing passengers to subdue the suspect.
Co-pilot’s Background Under Scrutiny
Reports indicate that this co-pilot was grounded by Oman Air in 2024 after his visits to radical Islamic websites were discovered. Afterward, he allegedly moved to Dubai. He had spent a considerable part of his life outside Oman, partly living with his Syrian mother. FlyDubai reportedly failed to check his background with Oman Air before hiring him.
A FlyDubai pilot demonstrated exceptional bravery during this incident, according to India’s Prime Minister.
New reports from sources familiar with the matter suggest the co-pilot had been banned from flying previously, due to radical views. It remains unclear if this information was shared with other entities.
Flight 1073 Incident
The incident took place on FlyDubai Flight 1073 en route to Tel Aviv. Allegedly, the co-pilot stabbed the captain, causing a dangerous dive. Reserve pilots regained control and successfully diverted the flight to Saudi Arabia. According to accounts, passengers and crew restrained the suspect.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the event as an act of terrorism, citing the suspect’s radicalization. He stated the attacker’s intention was to crash the plane. Netanyahu further confirmed investigations into whether the suspect had assistance.
Ongoing Investigations and Security Measures
The UAE is leading the investigation but commented sparingly to avoid influencing the investigation’s outcome. This situation has intensified the focus on airline pilot vetting techniques and security for flights to Israel. Analysts have called it a major security breach, raising concerns over missed warnings.
FlyDubai has temporarily ceased flights between Dubai and Tel Aviv in response to the incident. There was no immediate response from FlyDubai regarding inquiries from Fox News Digital.
