The New York Knicks ended a 53-year wait in June by securing a victory over the San Antonio Spurs in five games. Their success hinges on nearly the entire championship team returning to defend their title. Among these players, Miles McBride stands out as he enters the final year of his contract, set to earn just under $4 million.
The deadline for contract extensions on August 11 passed without a new deal for McBride. As rumors circulate, McBride appears as a potential trade asset, with discussions suggesting a move might involve a backup center.
However, trading McBride could be a mistake. An opinion piece in SB Nation’s Posting and Toasting argues that McBride’s modest salary is a compelling reason to retain him, emphasizing, “You cannot find that level of two-way reliability for under $4 million.” The piece suggests that trading a $4 million contract would likely only return a $4 million center, likely a third-string player. The Knicks would lose a key player for someone with less impact.
This scenario mirrors a previous situation with Mitchell Robinson. Last year, despite doubts about affording to re-sign him, the Knicks chose to keep Robinson rather than trade him. His contributions were instrumental in their title win.
In a video shared by SNY, head coach Mike Brown expressed his support for McBride’s continued presence on the team. “At the end of the day, he wants to be here, we want him to be here,” Brown stated, expressing confidence in the front office and McBride’s representatives to reach an agreement.
McBride’s value to the team extends beyond potential trade returns. He averaged a career-high 12 points, shot 41.3% from the three-point line, and maintained strong defensive plays. Losing him next summer without return would hurt, but losing him now for a minimally impactful player could jeopardize the Knicks’ chances of repeating their success.
