Sonny Gray’s Concerns After Game Against Yankees

51 minutes ago 0

Solid Performance in Face of Defeat

Boston Red Sox pitcher Sonny Gray delivered a strong showing in Wednesday’s final series game against the New York Yankees. Despite his performance, the game ended in a loss, and Gray shared his dissatisfaction with the timing of his removal by manager Chad Tracy.

During his outing, Gray pitched 4.2 innings. He allowed two earned runs and struck out five batters before exiting with a loss. Tracy decided to pull Gray when he reached the Yankees’ lineup for the third time in the fifth inning while leading 1-0. Gray allowed a hit to leadoff batter Ben Rice, putting runners on first and third. Tracy then opted to bring in Erik Miller, who immediately allowed a single, resulting in the Yankees scoring their second run. The game concluded with the Red Sox losing 9-2.

Gray’s Confidence in His Performance

Gray expressed confidence in his abilities, particularly when facing batters for the third time through the order. He stated, “I think I’m the best pitcher in the American League the third time through the order. I think that’s a fact. I would have liked to be trusted in that moment.”

His confidence isn’t without basis. In the 2026 season, Gray achieved a 1.99 ERA in 162 plate appearances against batters during his third time through the lineup. This performance ranked second in the American League and fourth in Major League Baseball. Only Kumar Rocker, Chris Sale, and Eduardo Rodriguez outperformed him in similar scenarios.

Outstanding Performance in 2026

Gray, a three-time All-Star with 14 years in the MLB, achieved remarkable success in 2026. He posted a 2.72 ERA across 29 starts. His 4.3 bWAR was the highest since 2023 with the Minnesota Twins, marking only the fourth time in his career that he logged more than 4.0 in a season.

Gray’s tally of 18 wins led Major League Baseball. In the absence of All-Star left-hander Garrett Crochet, he stood out as the team’s most reliable starter.

Gray holds a mutual option for the 2026 season. However, his decision to stay in Boston remains uncertain. After the recent game, Gray mentioned he “didn’t know” if he would remain with the team if he decides against retiring.

With his future undecided, fans wait for Gray’s decision on whether to continue his career with the Red Sox or explore other opportunities.
