The battle for control of Congress is reaching its final stage, with Republicans and Democrats preparing for the crucial final two years of President Donald Trump’s term. According to the latest Fox News Power Rankings, House Democrats are leading with 215 projected seats, while House Republicans are trailing at 201 seats. However, 19 seats remain classified as toss-ups, leaving the possibility of either party securing a majority.
One factor giving Republicans optimism is the influence of far-left candidates within the Democratic Party. Successes by socialist candidates raise concerns that the party may shift further left than most Americans prefer, a point Republican candidates are emphasizing nationally.
Fox News Power Rankings: Democrats hold a lead in the House, but redistricting continues to keep Republicans competitive.
Here’s an overview of 10 House districts currently held by Democrats where Republicans may achieve significant victories:
- Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District: The district, represented by Rep. Shomari Figures, D-Ala., was redrawn to boost Republican strength. A Supreme Court decision ordered the creation of a second Black opportunity district in Alabama, influencing Figures’ original victory. The recent Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais limited the Voting Rights Act’s ability to enforce racially advantageous district maps, aiding Republicans. Under the new map, 270ToWin suggests the district would favor Trump by 14%.
- Florida’s 9th Congressional District: Florida lawmakers have adjusted the state’s map to enhance Republican influence. Rep. Darren Soto, D-Fla., faces significant challenges due to redistricting. Soto’s district was altered to favor Republicans, with Trump predicted to win by 18%, according to 270ToWin.
- Florida’s 14th Congressional District: The Tampa-area seat held by Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Fla., was revised to improve Republican competitiveness. Castor, a moderate Democrat, confronts Republican Mike Beltran, a former Florida state lawmaker. The newly drawn district would show Trump winning by 10.5%, based on 270ToWin.
- Florida’s 22nd Congressional District: Florida’s redrawing efforts could have sparked a costly primary between incumbent Democrats, but both chose to run elsewhere. Democrat Pia Dandiya opposes Republican Casey Askar for control of retiring Rep. Lois Frankel’s district. Under the new map, Trump would win by 10%, as projected by 270ToWin.
- Florida’s 25th Congressional District: Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., is contesting in a district with shifted boundaries, formerly close and now tilted toward Republicans. The seat changed from Kamala Harris’ narrow win to Trump’s predicted win by nearly 10%. The district leans Democrat according to Fox News, but CPR rates it a toss-up.
- Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District: With Rep. Cleo Fields, D-La., retiring, changes in the district exacerbate challenges for Democrats. Supreme Court rulings in recent years downgraded the Voting Rights Act, enabling Republicans to redraw maps unfavorably for minority representation. Both Fox News and CPR forecast GOP gains.
- Maine’s 2nd Congressional District: With Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine, stepping down, Republicans see opportunity. Golden often deviated from his party, representing a district Trump won by 9%. Former Gov. Paul LePage leads the GOP challenge. Fox News calls it a toss-up, while CPR expects a Republican victory.
- North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District: Rep. Don Davis, D-N.C., faces a fierce re-election bid. Redistricting in North Carolina widened Trump’s margin of victory, increasing Republican odds. Davis competes against Republican Laurie Buckhout in a district Fox News rates as a toss-up, but CPR leans Republican.
- Texas’ 35th Congressional District: Texas Republicans initiated redistricting for potential gains. Former district representative Greg Casar moved districts, leaving this open race keenly watched. Trump’s projected victory by 10% creates a GOP opportunity based on Hispanic voter trends. Fox News and CPR project a Republican lean.
- Ohio’s 9th Congressional District: Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Ohio, faces a tougher campaign due to district modifications favoring Republicans. Despite historical redistricting challenges, Kaptur remains a seasoned political figure. Trump would have won by 10.5%, according to 270ToWin. Fox News and CPR classify it as a toss-up.
