A pediatric critical care physician from Pittsburgh, Dr. Idris Evans, 46, was fatally stabbed in his home in Edgewood, Pennsylvania. His wife was critically injured in the same attack. The incident transpired early Thursday morning, according to the Allegheny County Police Department.
The county’s 9-1-1 services reported the stabbing at 12:31 a.m. on Linden Avenue. First responders found both Evans and his wife with multiple stab wounds. Dr. Evans was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. His wife remains in critical but stable condition.
The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway of Pittsburgh, is accused of entering the couple’s home and attacking them while they slept. According to court documents referenced by KDKA, Evans’ wife recounted that they awakened to an assault by a man wielding a kitchen knife. The assailant, clad only in underwear, reportedly proclaimed to be ‘God.’ Additionally, she recalled Evans addressing the attacker as ‘Elijah,’ indicating a possible prior acquaintance.
Hemingway faces charges such as criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and criminal trespass. A K-9 unit located Hemingway near the crime scene with hand injuries. He remains in medical custody pending his transfer to the county jail.
Police are actively investigating to determine any existing relationship between the suspect and the victim. Evans’ position was as a medical director at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
