International Team Leads into Final Day of Presidents Cup

The International team has taken a lead on American soil for the first time heading into the final day of the Presidents Cup. Geoff Ogilvy’s squad came in as underdogs, with an average world ranking of 50.8 compared to the Americans’ 15.1. After overcoming challenges on Friday and Saturday, they secured 10.5 points against the United States’ 7.5.

Ogilvy commented on their performance, stating, “Today, both sessions had all red on the board, down in every match, and to come back and get 1.5 points out of this morning, we felt like a little victory.” The U.S. excelled in Saturday morning fourballs, reducing the International lead to 8.5-5.5. The teams later split Saturday’s afternoon foursomes at 2-2.

The Americans’ dominant pair, Cameron Young and Chris Gotterup, defeated Adam Scott and Sungjae Im with a commanding 6 and 4 win. Scott and Im struggled with a double bogey on the first hole, while Young and Gotterup excelled with six birdies and an eagle.

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele avenged their earlier loss by defeating Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim, 2 and 1. “Sneds told us to go out and get a point on the board first,” Cantlay explained. Taylor and Conners from the International team also secured important wins.

The Internationals demonstrated resilience in later matches. Ryan Fox and Min Woo Lee overcame early deficits to win against Sam Burns and Wyndham Clark, showcasing strength on par 3s.

Conners and Taylor also reversed their fortunes, capitalizing on mistakes by Russell Henley to secure a win for their team.

The International team has previously held leads going into Sunday three times but only won once, in 1998. In 2019, they held a lead but lost to Tiger Woods’ team. The Americans must secure 8 points from 12 singles matches to win, while the Internationals need 5 points.

Brandt Snedeker, U.S. captain, commented, “I hold myself to a high standard. I don’t think I’ve done the best job for them in that room.” The U.S. needs a strong performance on Sunday to challenge the International team’s lead. Key early matchups include Young against Ryo Hisatsune and Scottie Scheffler facing Nico Echavarria.

The eighth match, potentially decisive, features rookie Jackson Koivun against Si Woo Kim. Reflecting on the potential, Snedeker remarked, “There’s plenty of evidence that these things are never over. Our guys are ready to go.”
