Unusual End to Cubs’ Season at Tropicana Field

TAMPA, Fla. — The Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox are known for their iconic ballparks, Wrigley Field and Fenway Park. Fans from all over look forward to visiting these historic venues. However, this weekend’s final regular-season series at Fenway was disrupted by a nor’easter in New England, prompting Major League Baseball to relocate the game to Florida’s Tropicana Field.

After a season filled with unpredictability, the Cubs suddenly found themselves with time to relax in sunny Florida before the postseason. Enjoying leisure activities like beach outings, poolside reading, or even visiting the Dali Museum was a welcome break for the team. Pete Crow-Armstrong stated, “We’re just built for the weird stuff.” The relocation to Tropicana Field, which was renovated recently after Hurricane Milton, reflects the chaotic nature of their season. Both Cubs and Red Sox fans are expected to create a lively atmosphere at the stadium.

The Red Sox, familiar with Tropicana Field due to multiple series against American League East rivals, have an advantage. Their playoff seeding is secured, making the game relatively insignificant for them. Nonetheless, each game is part of the long 162-game season, and its impact remains uncertain.

Despite losing a doubleheader in Boston, the Cubs have various scenarios for the playoffs: San Diego, Atlanta, or back home, depending on results. Manager Craig Counsell urged the team to adapt and “have fun.” The Phillies’ poor performance helps ease tension for the Cubs, who might face the Padres.

The Cubs seek to end their regular season positively after potential setbacks with six recent game losses. Florida offers relaxation opportunities, but the MLB’s decision on game relocation received criticism. A move to Wrigley Field was seen as fairer, offering greater fan attendance opportunity.

MLB faced a similar scenario in 1990, relocating a White Sox-Rangers game due to rain, affecting home game count. The Sox accepted the decision, highlighting the need for flexibility in such circumstances.
