Home Renovation Reveals Ancient Human Remains

In spring 2019, Ross Sledger, 49, faced an unexpected discovery during a home renovation. A builder working on his kitchen addition found what appeared to be bones. Initially, Sledger assumed these were animal bones. He was surprised when the builder confirmed they might be human.

These remains were found at Sledger’s residence in Wye, Kent, England, and were re-interred this August in a nearby church. The bones, later identified as Anglo-Saxon and about 1,000 years old, triggered a police investigation. Ten officers examined the site and discovered parts of a second body.

Sledger described the findings as stressful due to renovation delays. The bones included a femur, two skulls, ribs, part of a pelvis, and fragments of a humerus and finger bones. Initially suspected as a modern crime scene, specialists eventually confirmed their ancient origin.

More discoveries ensued as Sledger found knuckles and fingers while installing artificial grass. He feared further delays but was relieved when the examination concluded quickly. After the investigation, the remains were transferred to a historical society and then to a local vicar. Permission hurdles prolonged the process of arranging their final resting place.

In August, a re-interment ceremony was held. The hymn “Jerusalem” was chosen, serving as a tribute to the ancient remains.

Sledger’s find is part of a trend of significant historical discoveries in the UK. Recently, another British couple found 70 historic English coins while working in their garden. These coins later sold for over £380,000.
