Secretary Rubio Discusses Middle East Conflict and NATO Relations

Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently joined ‘Fox & Friends’ to discuss the escalating tensions in the Middle East and his concerns regarding NATO’s role. As President Donald Trump prepares to address the United Nations General Assembly, Rubio highlights the challenges posed by Iran and previews diplomatic efforts in response to these tensions.

NATO and Military Base Access

Rubio questioned NATO’s purpose after allies prevented the U.S. from utilizing military bases during the Iran conflict. He said, “We had a couple countries say, ‘You can’t use your base here.’ Well, that’s absurd.” He emphasized the strategic advantage of NATO’s bases across Europe, which allows U.S. forces to project power globally.

Despite being a longtime NATO advocate, Rubio expressed frustration when access to these bases is denied. He stated, “If that’s going to be denied to us, then we’ve lost the biggest reason for us to be in NATO.” Rubio did not name specific countries, though Italy, Spain, and France were known to have restricted U.S. military operations during the conflict.

Rubio reiterated his support for NATO, citing its strategic benefits for the United States. He argued that the ability to use European bases is essential for maintaining global influence. Despite frustrations, Rubio noted that cooperation among NATO countries had improved recently.

He mentioned, “I think we’ve had more cooperation lately from a number of countries in NATO, so that is positive, but we’re still very disappointed.” This suggests that while progress is being made, challenges remain.
