Deadly Dispute Over Beach Chairs in Greece

A recent altercation at a popular beach in Vouliagmeni, Greece, south of Athens, turned deadly. An argument between an 82-year-old and a 76-year-old man over a beach chair resulted in the older man’s death on September 20. According to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, the conflict began when the 82-year-old attempted to reserve a chair for his group.

Witnesses reported hearing shouts across the beach during the confrontation. The 82-year-old man suffered cardiac arrest and collapsed in the sand. He was transported to a nearby hospital but could not be revived and was pronounced dead soon after his arrival.

The 76-year-old was arrested and charged with causing fatal bodily harm. Alongside him, a 21-year-old woman accompanying him faced charges of verbal abuse and aiding in the harm. She sustained injuries during the event but was later released from custody.

The dispute appeared to focus on six sunbeds, where the younger pair had already purchased tickets and claimed two loungers. However, the older man insisted that the entire area was reserved for his friends. Vouliagmeni Beach, close to central Athens, frequently sees large crowds, particularly on weekends.

As the situation escalated, it turned physical when the older man allegedly hit the young woman. Witnesses described retaliation from the younger man and other bystanders. A nurse and other beachgoers attempted to revive the 82-year-old with CPR and a defibrillator, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Authorities ordered a postmortem examination to determine the precise cause of death. Vouliagmeni Beach sees up to 8,000 visitors daily, causing congestion and tension among locals.

The beach resort manager was also questioned by police about the incident. The 76-year-old man and the 21-year-old woman are set to testify before a judge on September 23, as reported by Kathimerini.

This incident occurred amid national concerns about beach access in Greece. Earlier this year, Greek officials began a crackdown on unauthorized use of public coastlines. Measures included drones and a public complaint app aimed at stopping illegal placement of sunbeds.
