Austin Protests Erupt After ICE Agent Shoots Venezuelan Man

A protester wearing a mask was recorded spray-painting inflammatory messages, including “Kill Donald Trump,” on a bridge in Austin, Texas. This location near Anderson Square and Research Boulevard has become a focal point of demonstrations following the shooting of Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, a 28-year-old Venezuelan man, by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent.

The incident has garnered significant attention, with graffiti visible on a bridge pillar bearing the words “F*** ICE,” “F*** Donald Trump,” “Kill all pedos,” and “Kill Donald Trump.” Among these messages, “Talarico” with a heart and “love winz” are also spray-painted. These messages reflect heightened tensions following the incident.

The events leading up to the shooting remain unclear. According to the attorney representing Garces Perez, Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, her client’s vehicle, a blue Toyota Corolla, was hit twice by ICE officers in an unmarked vehicle. Following the shooting, Garces Perez was taken to the hospital and later released into ICE custody, leaving him with left side paralysis.

A spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security described Garces Perez as “an illegal alien who illegally entered our country under the Biden administration with a final order of removal.” The department stated the incident occurred amid a law enforcement operation.

Lincoln-Goldfinch asserted that Garces Perez is an asylum seeker, who entered the U.S. legally through a parole program, possessing a valid work permit. Issues arose concerning his deportation order after he moved and changed his address. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis has confirmed an ongoing investigation, with her department collaborating with federal, state, and local partners to collect evidence and conduct witness interviews.

Chief Davis has called for individuals with relevant information, including photos or videos, to assist the investigation, ensuring all findings are based on verified evidence. She emphasized that the Austin police would provide updates as details emerge.

The graffiti incident incited a social media backlash from right-wing figures. Andrew Kolvet from Turning Point USA criticized the narrative portrayed by the media on X, expressing skepticism about those spray-painting “Kill Donald Trump” being considered tolerant. Conservative influencer Nick Sortor urged law enforcement to act swiftly against those responsible.

Democratic lawmakers have responded to the shooting with calls for action. James Talarico, a Texas state representative running for the U.S. Senate, has demanded an independent investigation and full transparency regarding available video footage. He highlighted Garces Perez’s lawful entry into the country and lack of a criminal record, denouncing the shooting as a failure of law enforcement.

Austin’s Mayor Kirk Watson expressed anger and disappointment over the shooting, advocating for Austin police involvement to ensure impartial oversight during the investigation.
