Early 20th-Century Baseball
The American League, founded in 1901, marked a new era in baseball. The Chicago White Sox, then referred to as the White Stockings, played their inaugural game that year. They also clinched the first American League pennant. Completing the season with an 83-53 record, they finished four games ahead of the Boston Americans. This victory followed their top finish in the Western League the previous season.
Tragedy Strikes in 1969
On September 21, 1969, tragedy struck when Mexicana Airlines Flight MX801 crashed in a swamp near Mexico City’s airport, shortly after departing from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. The crash resulted in 27 fatalities. Ruth Shapiro, despite being injured, sprang into action to aid her husband and other survivors, courageously tearing her clothing to attend to others’ wounds.
Walter Payton’s NFL Debut
In 1975, Walter Payton, the Chicago Bears’ first-round draft pick, made his NFL debut against the Baltimore Colts. The game ended in a 35-7 loss for the Bears. Although Payton did not gain any yards from eight carries, he overcame his rocky start, ultimately playing 186 consecutive NFL games after missing just one during his rookie season.
Cardinal Bernardin’s Milestone
Cardinal Joseph Bernardin made a significant move in 1992 by establishing an independent panel to evaluate sexual abuse complaints against priests. This initiative aimed to ensure transparency and justice, designating a victim assistance minister to process these complaints, ensuring that this responsibility was not solely confined to clergy members.
