The race for the Florida Senate seat, previously occupied by Marco Rubio, has turned into a crucial battle between Republican Senator Ashley Moody and Democrat Angie Nixon. Recent opinion polls signal a competitive race, with Nixon posing a significant challenge to the Republican stronghold.
Polling Results
Two recent polls highlight the competitive nature of this election. St. Pete Polls conducted a survey among 913 likely Florida voters from September 15 to 17. The results showed Moody narrowly leading Nixon by only 0.4 percentage points. It recorded 45.2 percent support for Moody and 44.8 percent for Nixon, within a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.
The survey revealed Nixon’s substantial lead among independents, securing 49.8 percent compared to Moody’s 37.4 percent. Among the 18 to 29 age group, Nixon garnered 63.7 percent support. Conversely, Moody led with non-Hispanic white voters, obtaining 53.4 percent, and those aged 70 or older, where she had 61.1 percent support. However, these breakdowns should be approached cautiously due to small sample sizes.
Another poll by Change Research, conducted for Freedom Project USA from September 7 to 9, found both candidates tied at 47 percent. It included 1,107 likely voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points. Former President Trump’s net favorability in this poll stood at minus ten.
A separate Quantus Insights poll conducted from September 8 to 10, involving 733 likely voters, presented Moody with a stronger lead, capturing 50 percent of the vote compared to Nixon’s 43 percent. This poll had a margin of error of 4.1 percentage points.
Political Implications
The tied polls are noteworthy given Florida’s previous voting trends. In 2024, Republicans held a sizable voter registration advantage with 1.5 million more registered voters than Democrats. Republicans also outperformed Democrats significantly in both 2022 and 2024 Senate races.
Despite the recent polls suggesting a close race, election analysis platform Decision Desk HQ still considers Moody the favorite, assigning her a 78 percent chance of victory. RealClearPolling’s aggregate of recent surveys gives Moody a five-point lead, with 48.3 percent of voter support against Nixon’s 43.3 percent.
Key Events and Stakes
A major development in the race occurred when Angie Nixon secured the Democratic nomination over Alexander Vindman, despite being outspent. Nixon, a social democrat, won the primary on August 18, marking a significant victory.
Currently, Republicans hold 53 Senate seats compared to 47 for the Democrats. The outcome in Florida could play a pivotal role in determining Senate control, potentially impacting President Trump’s agenda during the concluding years of his term.
