Colorado U.S. Representative Lauren Boebert has strongly denied allegations in a recent House Ethics Committee complaint. The complaint accuses her of engaging in sexual relationships with her staff. Boebert’s spokesperson stated to Newsweek that these claims are false and politically motivated attempts to tarnish her reputation.
The complaint was filed by David Wheeler on September 17 and charges Boebert with improper conduct, including paying $200,000 in hush money. Wheeler, the head of the Democrat Super PAC American Muckrakers, aims to hold Boebert accountable.
Boebert, a prominent Republican, has faced recent scrutiny within her party. She notably voted alongside Democrats on a key subpoena-related issue, highlighting her independence.
Boebert’s personal life has also drawn public interest. Recently, her son was arrested on serious charges, adding to her challenges. Boebert expressed concern for those affected by these events, marking her focus on family amid the turmoil.
Wheeler stands firm on his allegations, criticizing Boebert’s response as a deflection tactic. He accuses her of past criminal behavior and voter deception, bolstering his claims with references to public records.
Despite Boebert’s threats of legal action, Wheeler proceeded with a defamation lawsuit against her in Colorado Federal Court. The judgment recognized Wheeler’s defamation claims, and the court found merit in his assertions of financial harm.
The House Ethics Committee now holds the power to investigate these allegations. Wheeler emphasizes that evidence from various documents and testimonies will be crucial in uncovering the truth.
Previous claims against Boebert have suggested involvement with former Representative Matt Gaetz. Both Boebert and Gaetz dismiss these claims as unfounded and encourage the release of any evidence supposedly supporting them.
Wheeler’s ongoing scrutiny of Boebert dates back several years. His 2022 lawsuit against her for defamation has been settled in 2024, highlighting ongoing legal battles.
The House Committee on Ethics will assess whether Wheeler’s complaint warrants further investigation. This decision-making process, however, has no specific timeline.
