A passenger on the Carnival Panorama cruise ship jumped overboard as the cruise concluded its final full day of sailing. The ship departed Long Beach, California, on September 13 and was returning from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
According to Carnival Cruise Line, a male passenger was confirmed overboard. A spokesperson stated that the incident occurred while the ship was en route back to Long Beach, California from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
“Carnival Cruise Line confirmed Saturday that a male guest aboard Carnival Panorama jumped overboard while the ship was sailing from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to Long Beach, California,” a Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson told Fox News Digital.
The missing guest was reported at around 11 a.m. as heard from announcements on the ship. The cruise had left its last port of call, Puerto Vallarta, at 8 p.m. Thursday.
The ship’s team undertook a search and investigation after being notified of the missing guest. They reviewed CCTV footage and alerted the U.S. and Mexico Coast Guards.
Carnival Cruise Line expressed its support to the passenger’s family, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones.”
Passengers aboard the ship shared experiences on platforms like Reddit, detailing announcements made throughout Saturday. The first announcement regarding a missing guest occurred at approximately 11 a.m.
By 3 p.m., the ship began turning around. At around 3:30 p.m., an announcement prompted a shipwide search, instructing all guests to return to their rooms. Security conducted checks in each stateroom, scanning passengers’ identification cards.
An announcement at around 5 p.m. confirmed the passenger had gone overboard, as verified by onboard cameras. Local authorities were to continue the search and rescue operation. Guests were informed they no longer needed to remain in their rooms.
By 7 p.m., guests were updated that the ship was expected to reach Long Beach at 9 a.m. the next day. Family members of the missing passenger were notified and received support from the care team.
