Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels was carted off the field during halftime in Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. This incident occurred after an apparent injury to his left elbow during the final play of the first half.
Daniels hyperextended his left elbow in an unfortunate manner. As he pulled away from center, he tripped, and used his left arm to try and regain balance, resulting in the injury.
Medical expert Dr. David Chao, a former head physician for the San Diego Chargers, reviewed tape of the injury. According to his analysis, the video showed a clear left elbow dislocation. He noted that the joint can become looser after an original ligament tear heals, making re-injury more likely.
Daniels had a similar injury in 2025 against the Seattle Seahawks, which complicates the current situation. Back then, an MRI revealed no fractures or ligament damage, sparing him from surgery. He returned later that season but was eventually shut down for recovery.
Marcus Mariota stepped in as the backup quarterback for the remainder of the game against the Cowboys. If Daniels’ injury proves severe, the Commanders’ season risks derailment early on.
Daniels was visibly emotional as he was taken off the field, covering his face with a towel to conceal his reaction from the crowd.
The next steps for Daniels will focus on assessing the severity of the injury and determining the best path for recovery. The team and fans alike await updates on his condition.
